Self-Guided Tours

Take a leisurely stroll through our beautifully preserved rooms and discover the stories of the past. Each corner of the Park House Museum holds secrets waiting to be unveiled. As you wander, imagine life in the 1850s — the creak of wooden floors, the flicker of candlelight and the echoes of conversations from generations ago. Our self-guided tours allow you to set your own pace and immerse yourself in history.

Please let us know if there is an accessibility issue with the stair-only access to the second floor. We will be happy to bring the resources to the main floor.

The Medicine in History Exhibit honours Dr. Park’s memory by examining the shift in common medical practices, professionalism among women and the development of “bedside manner.”

Surrounded by our medical artifact collection, learn and see how a society maintained their health. How have things really changed in thelast 200 years? That is yours to discover.

Loyalists and the Fur Trade

When Detroit was ceded to the United States following the Revolutionary War, the owners decided to dismantle the building and float it down the Detroit River to Amherstburg.

Come and see how this historic building is rooted in a romantic history and learn of its role in the Fur Trade.

The Victorian Home

The Park House Museum was owned by the Park Family for over 100 years…hence the name.

The main floor has been restored to the Park’s 1850s residence at the height of the family’s mercantile success and is our permanent display.

In a home built without electricity and running water, come and explore how your ancestors lived without modern conveniences.

The Indigenous Learning Centre

The museum’s Indigenous History Learning Centre is located on the second floor of the museum. This is a self-guided journey with access to books and videos to help provide a better understanding of Indigenous history, culture and the role of colonization.

Genealogy Research Centre

Open for learning

The museum’s Genealogy Centre is located on the second floor of the museum. It’s recommended to book a space in advance, so staff can prepare the files.

Experiences

For those seeking a more interactive adventure, we offer a chance to experience life in the past hands-on. Join our knowledgeable curator and volunteers as they guide you through the process of churning butter or preparing traditional dishes. Feel the satisfaction of creating something with your own hands, just as people did in the past. These hands-on activities provide a unique glimpse into the daily lives of those who once called the Park House home.

Butter Making Experience

Make your own butter, then spread it and delicious locally made jam on freshly baked bread from a nearby bakery.

Book at least one day in advance. This activity takes between 30 and 45 minutes. The cost for the program is $50.00 per group booking and includes museum admission for all participants.

Hearth Cooking Experience

in the Park House kitchen

This four-hour private cooking experience includes: a hands-on hearth cooking lesson, authentic 18th and 19th century recipes with the theme of your choice, all materials, followed by dinner prepared by you in the dining room and more.

Cooking themes to choose from are:

English Food in the 18th and 19th century
Scottish Food in the 18th and 19th century
Irish Food in the 18th and 19th century
Indigenous Food in the 18th and 19th century

This once-in-a-lifetime experience must be booked a minimum of three weeks in advance. Limited to 6 participants per experience.
